A Blue Economies report from Startup Genome and the Global Entrepreneurship Network places Western Denmark among the top 25 global maritime ecosystems, ranking it at number 20. This achievement makes Denmark one of only four countries with two domestic ecosystems in the top 25, which reaffirms their historic and proud role as a pioneering country in the industry. However, Western Denmark could risk a downfall in the rankings if the industry doesn’t adapt to shifting demands.

Western Denmark’s economic resilience and maritime expertise anchor its success, with Esbjerg as the focal point. However, despite Esbjerg’s strong financial foundation in the maritime sector, the region faces challenges in attracting critical investment, skilled talent, and entrepreneurial activity - key factors in Startup Genome’s ecosystem assessments. This difficulty is compounded by established industry players that maintain a stronghold, making it particularly hard for promising new startups to enter and compete in the market, even if they manage to withstand the absence of competencies and capital. These dynamics stifle innovation and limit Esbjerg’s potential to emerge as a global leader in the maritime industry.

In response, Danish Entrepreneurs is taking steps to foster change. The association has invited investors, businesses, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and students to join in the launch of Global Entrepreneurship Week Denmark, which this year is launched in Esbjerg. The event will focus on strategies to strengthen Western Denmark’s position and potential in the global maritime market. This is due to the facts that, even though the region lacks certain competitive advantages, the local ecosystem is still worth $4.35 bn, which we as a country tend to forget. We need to help the market adapt to future challenges such as the green transition and new innovations, by gathering the stakeholders in order to extrapolate the future solutions to unlock the full potential of the ecosystem in Western Denmark.

The goal of the event is to gain actionable strategies to empower a new wave of entrepreneurs, enhancing sustainability and competitiveness in the sector. Realizing this vision will require significant investment and a commitment to developing the skills essential for the future of the maritime industry. Ultimately, Global Entrepreneurs Week Denmark represents a call to action: A collaborative push to build a resilient and forward-thinking maritime ecosystem that will elevate Western Denmark’s position in the global maritime sector.
