Structuring Core Values in the UK Web Design Sector

Virgin Unite’s Action Network helped Toni Horn, founder of MBJ LONDON, think about how to apply his business’s core values into his and his team’s daily routine. He tells us how the People Challenge altered his mindset and brought about positive change.

MBJ LONDON is a tech company based in London, with offices in Berlin, Chicago, Boston, and LA. Our mission is to help small businesses go digital with websites as a service — WaaS. This is an innovative, subscription-based website package that includes the professional design, development, and services required to have and maintain a great online presence without having to invest thousands of pounds up front. By offering a website on subscription, our clients are better able to plan for their website expenses in a more easy and transparent way.

Before we joined Virgin’s Action Network, we were in the process of determining our company culture and our core values. The Action Network helped us think about this in a more structured way as well as assisting us in speeding up our deadline.

We had a clear understanding of what we wanted our core values to be, but we hadn’t thought about its application in everyone’s day-to-day role. Each step of this challenge helped us understand we had to make our values all encompassing.

Our core values have not changed, but the way we implemented them into the structure of the business and our team’s daily routine has changed completely. Now we prioritise regular monthly activities that reflect these values in a fun and meaningful way that positively benefit everyone in both the team and the community.

We have learned that core values are useless unless proactively applied throughout your business. It is important they are reflected in tangible activities so that team members’ understanding of a company is participatory, which will lead to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the business’s values.

In the future, we plan on continuing to incorporate more activities that reflect our core values. We think it is vital to keep the essence of these values ever-present, and we plan to look to our culture and spirit as the keystones of the company regardless of how big we grow.
