GEN Uganda Strengthens Ties with Government to Foster Entrepreneurial Growth
At the heart of the Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) Conference 2024, held on November 19th at Hotel Africana, Uganda’s entrepreneurial ecosystem received a major boost with the presence of key government officials. The collaboration between the private sector, including GEN Uganda, and government agencies is crucial in ensuring that the country’s entrepreneurial environment flourishes.
The conference’s opening ceremony featured remarks from prominent figures such as Hon. Henry Musasizi, Uganda’s Minister of State for General Duties, and Mr. Joseph Enyimu, Commissioner at the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development (MoFPED). Their involvement reinforced the government's commitment to supporting the growth of Uganda’s entrepreneurs and enhancing the business ecosystem.
Hon. Henry Musasizi: Strengthening Policy for Entrepreneurial Growth
Minister Musasizi’s speech underscored the role of policy in creating an enabling environment for entrepreneurs to thrive. With a focus on sustainable economic development, he emphasized the government's commitment to supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are critical to Uganda's economic growth.
"Entrepreneurship drives job creation, innovation, and economic development. The government recognizes the challenges faced by our entrepreneurs and is committed to creating policies that foster growth and innovation. We must work together – public and private sector – to strengthen the ecosystem," stated Musasizi.
His comments were aligned with the conference theme, "Entrepreneurship is for Everyone," highlighting the government’s intent to make entrepreneurship more accessible to all, especially those who have been marginalized in the past.
Mr. Joseph Enyimu: Financial Inclusion and the Role of ATMS in Economic Growth
Later in the conference, Mr. Joseph Enyimu, Commissioner at MoFPED, took the stage to discuss Uganda’s ATMS (Agri-industrialization, Tourism, Minerals & Services) strategy. This initiative is a key part of Uganda’s 10-Fold Economic Growth Strategy, which aims to drive the economy by focusing on sectors that have significant potential for growth.
"By prioritizing the key sectors of agri-industrialization, tourism, minerals, and services, we can create vast opportunities for entrepreneurs," said Mr. Enyimu. "The ATMS strategy aims to provide a clear path for small businesses to scale and tap into sectors that drive national growth."
Enyimu’s presentation was well-received, offering valuable insights into how entrepreneurs can leverage government initiatives and policies to accelerate their growth. The inclusion of these sectors in the national development plan is expected to open new doors for Ugandan entrepreneurs, especially in untapped industries.
GEN Uganda’s Role in Bridging Public and Private Sector Efforts
GEN Uganda, as a key partner in Uganda’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, continues to play an instrumental role in bridging the gap between entrepreneurs and government efforts. By working closely with policymakers, GEN Uganda ensures that the private sector's needs are met and that entrepreneurs are equipped with the right tools, resources, and networks.
During the conference, Charles Ocici, Executive Director of Enterprise Uganda and the GEN Uganda Board Chair, further reinforced this point: "We have witnessed the positive impacts of government collaboration in entrepreneurship. Through GEN Uganda, we are continuously facilitating dialogue between the private and public sectors to build a supportive ecosystem that can withstand the challenges entrepreneurs face."
This collaboration between government and GEN Uganda has paved the way for initiatives like GEW Uganda, which has become a platform for raising awareness, fostering collaboration, and inspiring the next generation of entrepreneurs.
