Marwan Jamal to guide GEN Saudi Arabia to strengthen international connections and implement new programs, initiatives

WASHINGTON, DC – The Global Entrepreneurship Network has appointed Marwan Jamal as managing director of GEN Saudi Arabia. In this role, Jamal is responsible for expanding collaboration among the country’s entrepreneurship ecosystem leaders and connecting them to their counterparts in more than 170 countries.

“Startups can flourish in all parts of the world, not just well-established tech hubs like Silicon Valley,” said Jonathan Ortmans, president of the Global Entrepreneurship Network. “Marwan is an active champion for entrepreneurs in Saudi Arabia and will strengthen efforts there while connecting the ecosystem to a global movement that can help it thrive.”

The announcement comes on the heels of GEN Saudi Arabia’s participation in the Biban 2017 SME Forum in Riyadh to explore smart strategies for advancing entrepreneurship throughout the Kingdom. GEN Saudi Arabia is made possible through a partnership with the Small and Medium Enterprises Authority, which led the Biban Forum.

“Entrepreneurs' success depends on how healthy the ecosystem is – and the ecosystem's strength depends on effective initiatives and engaging key players,” said Jamal. “One group cannot do it alone. Increasing collaboration among the various groups would and fortifying global connections are needed to elevate the ecosystem.”

At the global level, GEN operates in more than 170 countries. It fuels healthier start and scale ecosystems by fostering deeper cross-border collaboration and initiatives that engage entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, researchers and entrepreneurship support organizations.

GEN Saudi Arabia aims to strengthen the ecosystem by focusing on:

  • Connecting entrepreneurs with their peers through programs such as Startup Huddle
  • Increasing early-stage investment in startups with events and initiatives that build connections among angel investors inside and outside of Saudi Arabia
  • Enhancing opportunities for entrepreneurs to connect with mentors
  • Becoming a source of new data about entrepreneurship in Saudi Arabia, that focuses on entrepreneurial mindset, ecosystem networks and other entrepreneurship metrics; and
  • Connecting Saudi Arabian ecosystem actors to a global network of their peers to share knowledge and experience.

Prior to his appointment to GEN Saudi Arabia, Jamal spent time coaching, mentoring and educating Saudi startups for Qotuf Al Riyadh in Jeddah.
