An Affiliate of the Global Entrepreneurship Network

GEN Suriname

GEN began working in Suriname in 2010 when it organized the country’s inaugural GEW campaign. During the next several years, GEN grew the campaign by developing a community of local partners. The campaign drew the participation of government officials and connected a small, dispersed founder and ecosystem support base to a worldwide movement, planting the seeds for the more structured engagement that followed. In 2018, GEN launched a Startup Huddle chapter in Paramaribo. To widen its reach, GEN partnered with the the Act Now Foundation, Caribbean Climate Innovation Center (CCIC), Leduc Academy, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and the U.S. Embassy in Paramaribo resulting in the campaign becoming a structured, nationally recognized program engaging Suriname’s main entrepreneurship support organizations. GEW is now a major driver for connecting Surinamese businesses with international markets, capital, and training resources. As GEN’s activities grew into a nationwide platform, GEN established a formal affiliate — GEN Suriname — in 2024 to coordinate the community and run year-round programming. It works to align local stakeholders around a shared agenda while connecting Surinamese founders to global markets, capital, and training. As GEN has widened its reach, it has positioned Suriname within the broader Latin American and Caribbean community. It has also worked to develop localized tools to help founders expand across the region. Building on more than a decade of engagement, GEN’s enduring goal is to connect Suriname’s founders with the knowledge, networks, capital, and policy support they need to start and scale.
