In a bid to assist businesses in recovering from the economic challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, Uganda's Business Recovery Series 2023, organized by Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEW) Uganda in collaboration with Enterprise Uganda, has been offering a range of insightful courses. As part of this series, a recent Zoom webinar held on May 25, 2023, featured Stephen Luyonjo, Managing Partner of Fathom Associates, as the guest speaker. Luyonjo's presentation on "Building Wealth as a Collective: Strategies for Successful Investment Clubs" shed light on the significance of investment clubs and provided practical guidance on their establishment and management.
Luyonjo's session began by providing an overview of investment clubs, emphasizing that they involve pooling savings and sharing risks and profits among a group of individuals. He highlighted the advantages of joining an investment club, including rapid growth, synergy in skills and time utilization, savings discipline, and the potential for birthing large corporations. Different legal structures for investment clubs were explored, including limited companies, cooperatives, and partnerships, with recommendations and considerations for each.
Starting an investment club was discussed in detail, with Luyonjo suggesting beginning with minimal funds and a small number of members. He stressed the importance of establishing terms and conditions, selecting leadership, and deciding on an investment strategy in the club's initial meetings. Luyonjo also provided guidance on the registration process, legal entity types, and the importance of considering member count and objectives.
Key dynamics of investment clubs were highlighted, focusing on the establishment of clear rules through constitutions and by-laws, as well as the significance of regular meetings for accountability and progress. Luyonjo shared insights on savings and investment strategies, stressing the need to set affordable minimum saving amounts, align investments with members' passions and available time, and assign accountability for specific investments.
Success factors for investment clubs were discussed, emphasizing the role of strong leadership, a clear purpose, integrity, accountability, and effective planning. Luyonjo also advised against groupthink and encouraged clubs to evaluate objectively and revise strategies as needed. Success stories from notable investment clubs such as TransCentury Company Ltd, Norwich Union Properties Ltd, YSave Ltd, and Christ Link Capital Ltd were shared to inspire participants.
Luyonjo concluded his presentation by highlighting the Investment Club Association of Uganda (ICAU), established in 2012. ICAU serves as an umbrella body for investment clubs, providing support, professional services, and advice to member clubs. It encourages peer learning and collaboration, aiming to establish an Investment Club of Investment Clubs and act as a reference for financial institutions.
Overall, Stephen Luyonjo's webinar on "Building Wealth as a Collective: Strategies for Successful Investment Clubs" shed light on the importance of investment clubs as a platform for collective wealth creation and long-term financial success. His comprehensive insights and practical guidance have equipped entrepreneurs with valuable knowledge and tools to navigate the world of investment clubs effectively.
The Business Recovery Series 2023 continues to empower entrepreneurs and business owners by offering actionable advice and creating a space for knowledge sharing as businesses recover from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
