On September 13, 2024, GEN Uganda hosted a Fireside Chat: From Idea to MVP at Fairway Hotel in Kampala, bringing together 53 early-stage entrepreneurs eager to learn, connect, and share insights on turning innovative concepts into Minimum Viable Products (MVPs). The event, which formed part of GEN Uganda’s continuous effort to support entrepreneurs in their journeys, was a resounding success, offering invaluable learning opportunities for Uganda’s startup ecosystem.

From the opening remarks by Ronald Mukasa, Board Member at GEN Uganda, to the engaging keynote and insightful panel discussions, the event was designed to provide actionable takeaways for entrepreneurs building and refining their MVPs. Attendees left with new knowledge on how to test ideas, refine products, and scale with limited resources.

Opening the Event with Purpose

The day started with networking, as participants mingled over light refreshments, setting the stage for a day filled with collaboration and learning. The energy in the room was palpable as entrepreneurs, largely in the early stages of their business journeys, introduced themselves and exchanged ideas.

Ronald Mukasa officially welcomed the attendees, providing an overview of the event’s objectives and emphasizing the importance of MVPs in the entrepreneurial process. His message was clear: building an MVP isn’t just about launching a product, but about validating ideas, learning from the market, and pivoting when necessary.

Keynote: Insights from David Gonahasa on the Power of MVPs

The highlight of the morning came with the Keynote Address by David Gonahasa, a prominent figure in Uganda’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. David’s presentation, titled “From Idea to MVP: Fireside Chat on Turning Concepts into Products,” provided attendees with practical strategies for building MVPs.

David emphasized the importance of starting small, testing the market early, and remaining open to iteration. He shared personal anecdotes from his own entrepreneurial journey, illustrating how even simple, early-stage versions of a product can be used to gather critical customer feedback. He concluded by urging entrepreneurs to “fail fast and learn quickly”, highlighting that the key to long-term success lies in continuous improvement based on customer input.

Panel Discussion: Lessons from Entrepreneurship World Cup 2024 Finalists

Following the keynote, the event shifted to the Fireside Chat Panel, featuring Uganda’s EWC 2024 Finalists. The panel brought together three successful entrepreneurs:

  • Joan Nalubega from Uganics Repellents

  • Atuhaire Ronnie from Mpampe Digital Services Ltd

  • Katumwa Willy from TWAVE

Moderated by Ronald Mukasa, the panel discussion provided a deep dive into the MVP development journeys of each finalist. The entrepreneurs candidly shared the challenges they faced and how they navigated the uncertainties of building a product with limited resources. From Joan Nalubega’s experience in developing an MVP for Uganics Repellents, a company focused on malaria prevention, to Atuhaire Ronnie’s journey in building a scalable digital platform, each panelist offered actionable advice for the entrepreneurs in attendance.

Key discussion points included:

  • The importance of customer feedback in shaping and refining the MVP.

  • Strategies for securing early-stage funding to support product development.

  • Navigating the complexities of scaling an MVP to meet market demands.

The discussion was lively and interactive, with panelists offering real-world insights into the struggles and triumphs of creating a product that truly solves customer pain points.

Audience Engagement: A Two-Way Dialogue

After the panel discussion, the event opened the floor for a highly interactive Q&A session, allowing attendees to engage directly with the panelists. Entrepreneurs posed thoughtful questions on topics such as product-market fit, funding options, and how to balance customer feedback with long-term product vision.

The panelists’ responses were candid and practical, offering tangible advice to those in the room. Attendees appreciated the opportunity to engage in a meaningful dialogue, and many left with a renewed sense of purpose and direction for their MVP development.

Recognizing Uganda’s Entrepreneurial Talent

One of the event's highlights was the certificate presentation to the top three finalists of the EWC 2024 Uganda Finals. This moment was a celebration of entrepreneurial excellence, with Uganics Repellents taking first place, followed by Mpampe Digital Services Ltd in second place, and TWAVE in third. Each finalist was recognized for their innovative solutions and dedication to building impactful businesses in Uganda.

As the certificates were presented to the finalists by GEN Uganda Board Chairperson - Sam Iga and GEN Uganda Managing Director Mary Odongo, the finalists shared brief remarks about their experiences, with all three expressing gratitude for the platform that GEN Uganda and EWC provided to showcase their businesses.
