Nigeria has one of the fastest growing economies in Africa, and PBS NewsHour spotlights the country in a series of segments about Nigeria’s development.
The segment features the Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Programme (TEEP) – the flagship initiative of the parent foundation – and its founder and entrepreneur Tony Elumelu.
The vision of TEEP is to establish the pre-eminent pan-African entrepreneurship program and create 10,000 startups across Africa within the next 10 years that generate significant employment and wealth. The program provides select entrepreneurs mentorship, access to information, networking opportunities and seed capital.
In the segment, Elumelu discussed entrepreneurship as the catalyst to job creation and economic development.
“The right, sustainable way to intervene in Africa, for economic development, for inclusive development, is to invest,” Elumelu told PBS NewsHour’s Nick Schifrin.
The entrepreneurship program is currently finishing its first year, and is moving to accept new applications beginning Jan. 1, 2016. The Tony Elumelu Foundation hopes to receive more applications this year, increasing interest from the 20,000 they received in 2015, as well as from every country on the continent.
Watch the PBS NewsHour series, “Nigeria: Pain and Promise,” as well as the segment, aired on Dec. 3.
