MTN launched their 5G network today which covers parts of Johannesburg, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth and several other small towns with data plans ranging from 75GB to 500GB. 5G network is a new global wireless standard after 1G, 2G, 3G and 4G networks.

The launch happened at the 22 ON SLOANE campus and they conducted the network speed test with comedian, Nick Goliath. 5G wireless technology is meant to deliver higher multi-Gbps peek data speeds, more reliability, massive network capacity, increased availability and a more uniform user experience to more users. Higher performance and improved efficiency empower new user experiences and connects new industries.

The service is offered in two variants: 5G home and WiFi and 5G mobile-

  • 5G home WiFi- This home-connected plug and play solution connects WiFi enabled devices.
  • 5G mobile- Connect to MTN's 5G network and enjoy fast connectivity at home or on the go.

MTN is offering deals on the Huawei P40 Pro, Huawei P40, LG Velvet 5G phones, Huwaei CPE Pro 2 5G, Huwaei MC801A 5G and ZTE 6878 routers from July 1 since most South Africans do not have 5G enabled smartphones or routers.

According to MTN South Africa CEO, Godfrey Motsa, they are extremely encouraged by the release of temporary spectrum by Icasa. Their call to the regular and government is to release permanent 4G and 5G spectrum as a matter of urgency so that they can fuel the digital revolution on our nation's needs to bridge the digital divide that currently deepens the gap between the 'haves' and the 'have-nots'.
